In 1985 Eberhard Schoener goes in on a way different experiment:
World Expo in Tsukuba/Japan: every nation has one day to present
in special events each country in an attractive way. The day
of the German Pavilion is directed by Eberhard Schoener. It
is his first simultaneous satellite-concert. In Munich at the
BMW pavilion are the musicians who will perform together with
the artists in Tsukuba a composition by Eberhard Schoener. The
technique is provided by the Japanese people and already at
their first meeting Eberhard has to learn how important business
cards are. |

The
Japanese are no friends of improvisations as Eberhard Schoener
who has experienced through all his projects how important those
are. Each
side approaches slowly the day of the concert and not even the
shrill Nina Hagen can confuse the Japanese. She is singing her
own version of "Carmen" and performs songs by Brecht/Weill.
Simultaneously the musicians in Tsukuba and in Munich play together
(Jens Fischer, George Kochbek, Achim Gieseler and Michael Cretu). |

At the same time Sting is staying in Tokio and is meeting with
Eberhard Schoener at the hotel. Since a while both wanted to
produce an evening with songs by Brecht/Weill. Sting is singing
in the hotel room "Mackie the Knife" and that recording
is also played back for the ARD (Channel one of public German
television) on the German day of the Expo. One year later it
works out: A concert at the theatre in Hamburg. Pop-stars are
singing Brecht/Weill. Eberhard Schoener takes off to New York.
Sting wants to sing all songs in German language. They are rehearsing
for one week. Finally Gianna Nannini performs as Polly from
the "Three-Penny-Opera" and for the first time on
stage she is wearing a skirt! Also performing: Jack Bruce, the
Orchestra of the State Opera House in Hamburg and the actor
Tilo Prueckner who recites the connecting words. |
