Opening event for the 4th World Championships in Athletics
in Stuttgard: Eberhard Schoener is translating his dream of
a world concert into reality. It takes him a whole year to
prepare the event. Musicians out of all five continents are
playing together with the musicians on five stages at the
Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart live via satellite.
Two satellites are needed to bring all data across. It is
the first World Concert of that kind during which music is
performed not in sequence but simultaneous. Eberhard is traveling
to each place to rehearse - to Australia, Brazil, Agypt and
Bali. Then it is shot on video and the music is recorded.
Back in Munich the footage is edited and the musical composition
is to be finalized. The finished tape goes back to the local
directors so the images can be put together during the Live-Performance.
The start-signal is given over telephone lines. It is the
biggest logistical challenge of all of his projects as there
is no chance for a rehearsal together as this would require
additional satellite-time which was not in the budget anymore.
At the last rehearsal the day before the event in Stuttgard
the electric circuit is breaking down and needs to be rewired
overnight. It is pouring rain that night. But the sun is shining
bright on the following day and the concert happens without
any trouble. The satellites and wires are functioning perfectly
and Eberhard Schoener is conducting his "World-Concert".
